About
Quick facts: Entering the hall, the rich scent of sandalwood and the wood aroma aged by time immediately envelop you, filling the air with a quiet and warm atmosphere. A Maitreya Buddha carved from a single block of sandalwood stands about 26 meters tall. When sunlight streams through the windows, it shines on the Buddha with a warm golden glow.
Highlights: Near an old cypress tree in the courtyard, people often tie red cloth strips inscribed with wishes. The longest can exceed 3 meters. When the wind rises, the cloths flap and produce a rustling sound, like whispers carrying the rhythm of prayers. Locals have a custom of tossing copper coins into a small incense burner nearby. If the coin hits the burner’s edge, it is said the wish will come true within three years. The crisp clinking sound made when coins hit is said to quicken the heart.
Insider tips
- Arrive at opening to avoid tour buses and to hear monks' morning prayers.
- Dress respectfully, cover shoulders, and wear comfortable shoes for stairs and cobbled courtyards.
- Use the south courtyard and main hall steps for the best photos of the Maitreya Buddha and swirling incense.
- Expect bag checks and short queues at security, so carry minimal belongings and buy tickets online or at a kiosk ahead of time.
